At Harrison Gray Search, we talk to professionals every day who are thinking about making a change. Maybe you're feeling stuck. Maybe your current role no longer aligns with where you see yourself long term. Or maybe you're just curious about what else is out there.

Whatever the reason, making a career change is a big decision. It takes thought, strategy, and a little courage. If you're on the edge of that decision, here are a few tips to help you move forward with confidence.

1. Get clear on what’s driving the change

Before you make a move, take a step back. Ask yourself why you're feeling the pull to do something different. Is it the work itself? The environment? A lack of growth or purpose? The more honest and specific you can be, the easier it will be to target roles and companies that are a better fit.

2. Identify your transferable skills

You might be shifting roles or industries, but chances are you’re bringing a strong skill set with you. Maybe it's leadership, communication, project management, or problem solving. Make a list of the core skills you've built and think about how they show up in the type of role you're aiming for.

3. Do the research

Start exploring companies and industries that interest you. Read job descriptions. Follow thought leaders on LinkedIn. Listen to podcasts. Talk to people who do the kind of work you’re curious about. The more you understand the landscape, the more confident you’ll feel making the leap.

4. Be realistic about the transition

Not every career change comes with a promotion. If you’re switching industries completely, be prepared for a potential pay cut or a step back in title while you ramp up your knowledge and experience. If you’re staying in the same industry and aiming for advancement, be honest about your skill set. Use your résumé to highlight what you’ve accomplished and why you’re ready for the next challenge. Show how your experience translates into value for the employer, not just in the past but going forward.

5. Partner with the right recruiter

A good recruiter won’t just help you find a job. They’ll help you think through your goals, identify the right opportunities, and coach you through the transition. If you're serious about making a move, reach out to someone who specializes in the type of roles you're aiming for. You don’t have to do this alone.

Final thought

Changing careers is rarely simple. But if you approach it with curiosity and intention, it can lead to some of the most rewarding work of your life. Take your time. Trust your gut. And don’t be afraid to make the first move.

We’re here to help if and when you're ready.
